CANAKKALE - TROY AND GALLIPOLI
The city, which is the cradle of Trojan, Assos like former civilization
centers, and where Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park, various martyr,
monument and graves are present, the most bloody fights of Çanakkale wars
are occurred, and Aegean and Marmara seas are connected and Europe and Asia is
met at its coasts has an important place in inland and foreign tourism.
TROY
It is located on a mound called "Hisarlik" on the south - east side of the plain
of the River Scamander, where the Straits join with the Aegean and are tat-her narrow, within the boundaries of the Province of Canakkale.
Troy is famous for different reasons. First, it is associated with the sagas of the Trojan War told by Homer in the "Iliad" and the “Odyses". Second, it is linked with the German excavator Schliemann who dug the ground the first time.
At the end of the excavations nine cities have been unearthed. Later on they have been subdivided into 46 strata.
GALLIPOLI
Gallipoli is the name for the narrow peninsula that forms the northwestern part
of the Çanakkale straits, the waterway that links the Aegean Sea with the Marmara Sea. Gallipoli became globally known after the Allied assault during W.W.I. Organized by Sir Winston Churchill,
it had the intention of capturing Istanbul. Gallipoli is a particularly significant site for Australia and New Zealand. Every year on April 25,
there is a national holiday to commemorate their soldiers who gave their lives on the Gallipoli battlefields.
